What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "Essentuki"? Well, of course, the most delicious mineral water, known all over the world.
In terms of its taste, chemical and gas composition, and most importantly in terms of medicinal properties, it has no analogues in the world.
Essentuki mineral water goes a long way underground, saturated with ions and trace elements. An important point is not just the mineral and gas composition of these waters, but the optimal ratio of these components, which ensures their high degree of assimilation in the gastrointestinal tract. It is these features that determine their healing properties.
Unlike the sources of neighboring Hot and Acidic waters (Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk), the mineral waters of Yessentuki did not arouse resort interest for a long time.
The first mention of Essentuki dates back to 1811, when the famous physician F.P. Haaz, exploring the mineral springs of the Caucasian Shakhteral Waters, discovered salt-alkaline springs near the Bugunta River.
One day he stopped for the night in the village of Yessentukskaya. According to legend, local Cossacks told him about the "horse" springs where the animals went to drink. horses liked this brackish water more than fresh water from the river.
The doctor went to the amazing springs, and told about his discovery in the book "My journey to the Alexander Waters" in 1811. This year became the official date of the discovery of the Yessentuki deposit.
Haaz also discovered physiological assimilation, which explained the therapeutic effect of mineral waters. The essence of the theory is that organs are "washed with juices" containing the same chemical elements as mineral waters. Therefore, the intake of mineral water stimulates the work of the organ, which increases appetite, absorption of nutrients and their metabolism, which explains the preventive and curative effect on the body. He accepted as an axiom the complex positive effect on the healing of patients of all the available factors of the resort, namely good weather, a favorable climate with hot, clean and dry air, as well as low atmospheric pressure. He considered compliance with prescribed diets and an active motor regime to be an important factor for the treatment of the body at the resort, which was automatically performed due to the walking distance to the mineral water sources.
In 1823, the unique waters of Essentuki were studied in detail by Professor A.P. Nelyubin of the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy. It was he who numbered all the sources known at that time and conducted a chemical analysis of the Essentuki waters. The richest in terms of water volume and mineral composition were the keys numbered 4 and 17. Admiring the variety and uniqueness of the healing properties of the water, Nelyubin called the Essentuki water "Russian Seltzer and Vichy."
Guests and residents of the resort town of Yessentuki have an excellent opportunity to "touch the sources" - to enjoy the unique mineral water from springs discovered back in tsarist times. The medical parks are equipped with pump rooms "Yessentuki-4" and "Yessentuki-17", drinking galleries are located in the resort area.
